Can mainstream politics actually deliver meaningful change for men—or does the culture have to change first?
On this episode of Repairing the Manosphere, Paul Elam sits down with political scientist Dr. Stephen Baskerville to examine a question increasingly relevant to men who have become skeptical of conventional political promises: Is there still a productive place for men’s interests inside mainstream politics, or are political institutions largely downstream from a culture that must be changed first?
Baskerville brings an unusually deep background to that discussion. A retired professor of politics with a PhD from the London School of Economics, he has taught in the United States and Europe and has spent decades writing about fatherhood, marriage, divorce, family policy, sexual politics, civil liberties, and government power. His books include Taken Into Custody: The War Against Fathers, Marriage, and the Family, The New Politics of Sex, and, most recently, Who Lost America?
Using Sarah Huckabee Sanders and the broader politics of manhood as a starting point, Paul and Stephen explore the relationship between electoral politics and cultural power. What happens when political movements seek men’s votes while leaving deeper assumptions about masculinity, marriage, fatherhood, sacrifice, and male obligation largely untouched? Can legislation lead cultural change—or does durable political reform become possible only after enough people stop accepting the cultural premises that produced the existing institutions?
The conversation also examines the tension between participating in the political system and building alternatives outside it. For men who have already questioned traditional expectations surrounding relationships, marriage, family courts, and male duty, is voting harder for the right candidates sufficient? Or is cultural withdrawal, institution-building, and changing men's personal choices an equally important part of the equation?
This isn’t a party-line discussion. It’s an examination of where political power actually comes from, how culture becomes policy, and what role men themselves play in changing either one.
