Bill Burr has reignited controversy over Luigi Mangione and the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson by arguing that corporate leaders responded to the attack with personal security rather than examining the public anger directed at their industry. In a new Rolling Stone interview, Burr said executives removed their photographs from company websites and hired security instead of asking whether their business practices helped create the conditions for “some crazy person” to commit violence. He added that they were corporate executives, “not the president,” and should examine their conduct. Critics interpreted the remarks as victim-blaming or suggesting that Thompson’s killing was an understandable response to the healthcare industry’s failures. Burr did not explicitly endorse the murder in this specific excerpt, and he described Mangione as a “crazy person,” but the comment continues a pattern of provocative statements. After Thompson’s 2024 killing, Burr said he was not troubled by health-insurance executives fearing for their safety, accused some corporate leaders of being “mass murderers” through harmful decisions and later used the phrase “Free Luigi.” Mangione pleaded guilty in August 2026 to federal stalking charges and admitted shooting Thompson. Burr’s larger argument is that extreme inequality and corporate abuse are producing public rage, but his framing has again blurred the line between condemning an industry and appearing to rationalize political violence.
