I forget how old you are, but have a look at the cars that were made in the 40's, 50's and 60's etc., and are like 2 or 3 liter straight 6 motors, you could look into the engine bay and see the road below, down each side of the engine.... and now the engine bays are chock full of shit..... And like in this video, he has to pull out 10 things to get to one thing, yet on all these old engines, you could do everything, because you could get at everything...

They could have dressed it up with mechanical fuel injection, better heads, and a few other things... to improve combustion and fuel effiency - but these were EXCELLENT easy to fix and maintain motors - as simple as all fuck to fix and tune and service.....
