As a side thought, what can you get out of that pine forrest area, that is good to eat or at least will keep you alive, like by digging around through the pine needles, the dirt and old dead trees etc.

Also I don't know if you mentioned this, but knowing about the average seasonal prevailing winds, through a particular area / including storm events, is a HUGE help in staying warm, dry and comfortable.

i.e. Like the prevailing winds say come in from the east during winter, and the wind is generally cold, but the rain storms come in from the north, so you orientate your shelter to cover and protect you from the wind and storms coming from the east and north...
