Norwegian Family Of 6 Constructed Their Dream Dome In The Arctic Circle

Surviving in the Arctic Circle isn't easy. The weather can drop incredibly low. You might even say that your odds of surviving in such frightfully cold conditions are slim if you don't find shelter right away. But one Norwegian couple decided to accept the ultimate challenge and live in the Arctic, but they're not exactly freezing or roughing it. Benjamin Hjertefølger and his wife, Ingrid, built a three-story cob house, which they call Nature House, and the structure is wrapped in a solar geodesic dome, which makes it the most self-sustaining building that you would ever want to live in when you're in the middle of the freezing Arctic.

@KEEPER: I was thinking about it from a bachelor perspective - You wouldn't want to build a prepper refuge to hide from a zombie apocalypse, only to then let media know about it. Of course it's not the exact case of the video; a family that isolate themselves THAT much seems weird to me. I guess both parents are a LOT into that kind of life.

@AvyScottAndFlower: got ya, well i don't claim to know their motivations, i just thought it was a cool video to mirror because of the basic idea of the type of home it was, to many people think it's better to live in an conventional box home. but i think it's a bit silly since you can live almost anywhere and live how you want to live. and it's just to give folks more ideas into what they might be into as it's a lot of other ideas being presented.

@KEEPER: Yeah I know, it's cool to learn about people ACTUALLY doing it. :)

@AvyScottAndFlower: i also like to use the natural things within the environment to my advantage, you don't have to have all the same things they use in the video, but it's still pretty cool that they can build something like this in locations that are either harsh for most folks, and the fact that you can build with almost limitless options. i personally like the earthship designs along with the dome design because not only will it be a stable structure but it will be a sound design with heating and cooling and energy efficiency in mind, but also the basic ideas behind how an earthship can use water in multiple ways to limit waste and also to save on your bills. you can build them with off grid in mind as well as having other options in mind just in case. being off grid completely is nice and all, but i wouldn't mind having both options for the just incase situations. i also love that these types of houses are pretty damn good when it comes down to sustainability in the long term, and they can be built outside of the dense cities of commies, so the commies would have to travel far and wide to find you if they were so willing to search. but if an collapse happens, you are pretty much good when it comes to getting most of your basic needs met.

@KEEPER: I've thought that in an absolute SHTF scenario, it'd be better to build a secret, underground BUNKER, rather than a cabin. But living like that, ALL on your own, would prove to be quite a mental challenge. Because at that point, I don't even know if you're ''living'', anymore.. I think, like TFM says, the least shitty bet at that point, would be to join a community, and hope for the best. People like that family in the video and remote communities would get the ultimate upper-hand though (except maybe in a nuclear winter).

@AvyScottAndFlower: yeah i could see that. and sometimes you have to put aside your biases to live in such an community and it can be worth it, but some communities are built on a lie and you really have to pick and choose wisely on the community you decide to go with.

@KEEPER: The downside of ANY community is, once the perceived order (Government) is effectively GONE, you WILL start to see/experience FREQUENT back-stabbing. I've SEEN it happen, among prepper communities, AND sheit hasn't even hit the fan! Because, why wouldn't it happen. People are stupid and self-centered, and if things get tight.. well.. guess what. As shitty as Government(s) is, it DOES provide a LOT of stability; that's rapidly GONE after a SHTF scenario. Then all the people who were ROOTING for Governments to fall would be like ''um wait, this NO Government thing.. it's kind of a REAL crap-fest, why didn't anyone tell us..''. The only exception to this is an already WELL-ESTABLISHED, stable isolated community, like the Amish.

@AvyScottAndFlower: the amish also all agree with their religion, and that religion puts the men in control, lol it's almost like you have to make up a religion and keep your people away from the rest of the world to keep them in line to prevent them from knowing about the outside world, but that requires you to live just like the Amish which most people won't do.

@AvyScottAndFlower: it reminds me of a comment the Amish make in an family guy episode when he prays lol. "the right amount of techknowledgy" comment is what i'm talking about.
