Excellent point.
In 1972 a bunch of chosen ones, media and marketing people came to together to figure out how to use the camp story to the advantage for their cause (financial gain, guilt shaming and control). They came up with the term mentioned here, and started the worldwide program through the media.

Before 1972 no one had ever heard of the term.

Says a lot about its validity in my opinion.
