If someone is not doing their job, write them up and escalate it that way. It is not a justification for treating someone bad especially in a professional setting. That is part of being a good manager maintaining professionalism and being respectful even with bad workers.

@TheRareBreedTheory: Escalating it where? Unfortunately life just doesn't work like this. Have you managed people? To change people's behavior you need to use positive and negative reinforcement. Treating bad means reduced hours, no positive reinforcement, not pay rises, and posibly getting fired. You can't baby bad employees and care about their feelings. The world doesn't have enough resources to care about the feelings of the useless. Good employees get treated well, if you're not getting treated right at work, maybe ask why?
