The term is "egocentrism", meaning the inability to see things from someone else' POV. Piaget coined the term in testing children's cognition. He sat a child across a table from a teddy bear and showed a card red on one side and blue on the other. He showed the child both sides, then set the card up vertically so that blue faced the child. "What color does Teddy see?" How the child responded determined his/her cognitive level. There was a correlation between age and cognition, and thus the ability to think outside one's own experience was a sign of maturation.
