Women and Cosmetic Surgery | The Psychology Nobody Talks About
This episode asks whether cosmetic surgery can actually tell men anything about someone’s psychology — and whether procedures such as rhinoplasty and breast augmentation should tell men anything meaningful when dating.
Cosmetic surgery is overwhelmingly performed on women. Men are also routinely told not to judge women by appearances, to ignore their instincts, and to treat observable warning signs as meaningless. But when choosing who you allow into your life, patterns matter.
Recent research has examined the relationship between cosmetic surgery, body dysmorphic disorder, anxiety, depression, appearance-related distress, and repeated dissatisfaction. Some of the findings raise important questions about whether the surgery itself is the issue — or whether the psychological pattern surrounding it matters more.
I examine recent research from Singapore, Germany, the United States, and Saudi Arabia, including studies of rhinoplasty, breast implants, broader plastic-surgery populations, body dysmorphic disorder, anxiety and depression — and what men should realistically pay attention to when dating and choosing relationships.
The surgery itself is not a diagnosis. The pattern around it may tell you much more.
