Judge Judy Sheindlin has sparked a fierce political debate after delivering an unapologetic defense of America, capitalism and individual excellence while promoting a television special celebrating her 30-year career.
In a USA Today interview, the 83-year-old television icon said people who dislike the United States should go somewhere else rather than come to what she called the world’s greatest and most successful country and demand that it be changed.
Sheindlin argued that America became successful because it rewarded entrepreneurship, achievement and exceptional people, citing innovations such as the polio vaccine and the rise of companies including Apple and Amazon. She also rejected the idea that every person possesses equal abilities, arguing that society should recognize brilliance instead of pretending talent and achievement are evenly distributed.
The remarks quickly went viral, winning praise from conservatives who interpreted them as a rebuke of socialism, political correctness and anti-American activism. Critics responded that telling people to leave dismisses the legitimate role of dissent and reform in American democracy.
The viral clip should not be presented as an endorsement of Donald Trump or as a literal attack on every liberal. Sheindlin endorsed Nikki Haley during the 2024 Republican primary, previously backed Michael Bloomberg and has criticized both Trump and Joe Biden. Her remarks were a broader defense of capitalism, patriotism and merit, but they landed directly in the middle of America’s culture war.
