https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/....Benchmark_(surveying

The term benchmark, bench mark, or survey benchmark originates from the chiseled horizontal marks that surveyors made in stone structures, into which an angle iron could be placed to form a "bench" for a leveling rod, thus ensuring that a leveling rod could be accurately repositioned in the same place in the future. These marks were usually indicated with a chiseled arrow – specifically a broad arrow – below the horizontal line. A benchmark is a type of survey marker.

The term is generally applied to any item used to mark a point as an elevation reference. Frequently, bronze or aluminum disks are set in stone or concrete, or on rods driven deeply into the earth to provide a stable elevation point. If an elevation is marked on a map, but there is no physical mark on the ground, it is a spot height.

The height of a benchmark is calculated relative to the heights of nearby benchmarks in a network extending from a fundamental benchmark. A fundamental benchmark is a point with a precisely known relationship to the vertical datum of the area, typically mean sea level. The position and height of each benchmark are shown on large-scale maps.

The terms "height" and "elevation" are often used interchangeably, but in many jurisdictions, they have specific meanings; "height" commonly refers to a local or relative difference in the vertical (such as the height of a building), whereas "elevation" refers to the difference from a nominated reference surface (such as sea-level, or a mathematical/geodetic model that approximates the sea level known as the geoid). Elevation may be specified as normal height (above a reference ellipsoid), orthometric height, or dynamic height which have slightly different definitions.

Triangulation points, also known as trig points, are marks with a precisely established horizontal position. These points may be marked by disks similar to benchmark disks, but set horizontally, and are also sometimes used as elevation benchmarks. Prominent features on buildings such as the tip of a church spire or a chimney stack are also used as reference points for triangulation. In the United Kingdom, triangulation points are often set in large concrete markers that, as well as functioning as triangulation points, have a benchmark set into the side. With the increasing use of GPS and electronic distance measuring devices, the same techniques and equipment are used to fix the horizontal and vertical position of a survey marker at the same moment, and therefore the marks are usually regarded as "fixed in three dimensions".

Flush brackets are metal plates placed flush into the faces of buildings or other structures. Although many are attached to triangulation pillars as above, Non-Pillar Flush Brackets were also frequently located in the faces of buildings.[1]

Similar to the Brit MOD Arrow Mark stamped on weapons and kit. Also a similar design was printed on British prisoner uniforms for a time. Greys with a bunch of bench marks over the shirts and trousers. Symbol used for cartographers and artillery - the stereoscopic rangefinder.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broad_arrow --------- I was trying to get the memory of how the urgency of mapping the UK came to the fore, I think it was by King Charles in 1500 - 1700 ?????? and it had a lot to do with the European wars at the time, they needed a population census, and all the roads, towns, villages and skill set of the population.... and the great surveying was part and parcel of all that. Preparation for invasion and war ..... I had read up on it, but refinding it all again at 3am..... Uggghhh - I need to get busy..... AND yes I have an OLD UK resized bayonette, that when the wooden handles are removed it has the Broad Arrow, of the ordinance dept of 1904 stamped into it....

yea, not your property if they can just enter your property without your permission whenever the hell they feel like it...
its need at all, but they could have bought small plots from the owners to have small 5x5 foot square spots where they could then place the markers...
those nano plots would then be owned by the survey group (or whatever) and 'the crown'...

course you do not own your land anyways because you get to pay the gov. "taxes" on that land that is supposed to be yours...

It's a surveyors mark... in a prominent location, that is unlikely to be demolished, it's prominent and everyone can see it.

AND once upon a time... they were very important and they didn't get overgrown with weeds etc..

And it's nice to know what they are really for..... For centuries I thought they were markers for Ancient Alien UFO landing sites....

When I have seen this mark in the UK. I thought it was some Stonemason signature/tag to mark their work or craftmanship out...

@magot: I am not real sure where in the video it is.... It's 5 hours and 24 minutes long. But there is a part on the distances and scales and time lengths.... Like if the sun was the size of a golf ball, the earth as the finest speck of pepper would be 4.3 meters away from it, and the next closest sun would be Proxima Centurai - at about 1,280 Km away.... So in going around the universe, if you were basically immortal, and you had a very fast ship, and didn't die from abrasion of dust, radiation from collisions with hydrogen and space radiation, and all that... or ploughed into space rocks and ice blocks, entire intelligent civilisations can come and go in billions of years....
