It's a specialist one off device - a submarine, that gets towed to the location and then it sinks and drifts with the current... comes up a month later... (or something) . The guy who bought it to make it into a tourist submarine.... well it got left and forgotten... and and and ....

I think I read about this... Mariarna Trench. I thought the US Navy did that dive. Nevermind, they swam outside in the trench water.

No the Trieste submarine was a HUGE petrol filled tank for bouyancy, and a very very thick walled steel sphere underneath..... This units safe working depth was 2000 feet and I think the Marianas trench was or is, 28,000 feet at the deepest part.
