What Veterans Do in the First 48 Hours When the Grid Goes Down — You Were Never Taught It

He has less food than you. His family will be fine. Eleven sheets of paper on a kitchen wall — written in the first hour of a blackout.

Veterans don't win the first 48 hours with a bigger pantry. They win with habits the Army has been drilling for a century — written for platoons, never translated for a house with a teenager and a grandmother on blood pressure pills. This video translates them. Eleven sheets, in the order a trained man writes them: what goes on each one, why it's there, and why none of it costs a dollar. The one number that actually runs your house. The dial that ends every argument. The Army's written coffee schedule. How soldiers see in the dark without gear. The sheet that outnumbered a hurricane.

Everything in the video comes from public military doctrine, peer-reviewed sleep research, and state health department records — not from a gear catalog.

THE RECEIPT
- Army planning doctrine: facts/assumptions, critical information requirements, back-briefs, force protection conditions, succession of command, civil considerations (ADP/FM 5-0, FM 6-0, ATP 5-19, ATP 2-01.3)
- Army night-vision guidance: 30–45 min dark adaptation, off-center viewing, night blind spot, why red goes black (FM 3-22.9 App. H)
- Army/DoD caffeine guidance: 200 mg per dose, max every 4 hours, none within 6 hours of sleep (FM 7-22; OPSS)
- 24 hours awake ≈ 0.10% blood alcohol performance — Dawson & Reid, Nature, 1997
- Sleep inertia worse than 26 hours of sleep deprivation — Wertz et al., JAMA, 2006
- Northridge earthquake, Jan 17 1994: Griffith Observatory calls about the "strange sky" (LA Times / NPS)
- Hurricane Laura, Aug 2020: 8 of the first 15 Louisiana deaths from generator carbon monoxide (Louisiana Dept. of Health / NPR)
- Dec 2022 Tennessee cold wave: TVA's first-ever rolling blackouts, ~72,000 Nashville outages at peak (WKRN / The Tennessean)

THE FINE PRINT
Never run a generator inside a house, garage, or carport, or near an open door or window — carbon monoxide kills within minutes. If your critical supply is a prescription, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about outage planning before the lights go out; the video is education, not medical advice. If someone in your house is injured, sick, or not recovering from stress, get medical help.
