@WMHarrison94: WEll being greatly ignorant about most things... I was under the impression that the cutting (in general) was a mixture of dirt and boulders and shit. BUT they said the bottom was HARD rock.... SO going down by say 60 meters deep (say 40 meters below sea level) and 200 meters wide by 160 Km.... that is a lot of hard work AND huge $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

@WMHarrison94: I don't have a highly accurate geographical map of the entire route of the Panama Canal, as to making a trench 50 meters lower than sea level (lowest of low tides) and 200 meters wide and the full length - from ocean to ocean... so ALL the biggest ships can just drive on through - notice I did not say "sail" because none of them actually have sails.... Well that is why they went with locks and raising the ships up, because the cost of a shallower canal over the mountain range (???) was a lot easier and cheaper than digging straight through.... SURE it's not cheap.... but I think tunneling 8 tunnels 1 meter in diameter and 25 meters apart, and say 50 meters under the current canal bottom, for the full 160 Km and then filling them with AMPHO or was that ANFO - Ammonium nitrate fertiliser and diesel high explosive, and just blasting the bottom out... still that is a LOT of rock and dirt to move out. Fill say 400mm Diameter pipes with the explosive and flood the tunnels with water... That would be cooler than the Ruski and Nazi anti tank guns....
