We live in a time where it is often claimed that everything now is far worse than anything in the past, at least the pretence of such a thing is often on display but is everything as truly terrible these days as they claim?

You hit on it at the end but I think what these men miss is patriarchy. In a patriarchy it's at least possible to train wives to be wives. So if you're in a bad marriage, you train yourself and your wife to be better. Not just be trapped and sad.
