The Vatican has set its sights on the rapid weaponization of artificial intelligence. The Pope himself fired warning shots in the war of words, urging that AI be disarmed and never equated with humans.

The Catholic leader also stressed that such powerful technology should not be controlled by a select few. Pope Leo personally delivered the Vatican’s keynote address on AI, known as an encyclical letter — the first of his papacy.

The religious leader was joined by the co-founder of the American AI giant Anthropic. Chris Olah stated that the development of artificial intelligence cannot be left solely to tech companies, as he called for greater oversight from religious leaders, governments, and civil society. Anthropic has been at odds with the Trump administration, refusing to allow the use of its AI for fully autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance.

The Pope, who has also had his share of disputes with Washington recently, spoke out in support of Anthropic.

To delve deeper into the AI debate, we speak with technology futurist and filmmaker Ian Khan, as well as author and YouTuber Jay Dyer.
