A new government report has exposed how many Americans can work for enormous companies and still need food stamps or Medicaid just to survive.
The Government Accountability Office examined data from 11 states. Walmart repeatedly appeared among the employers with the largest estimated numbers of working adults receiving SNAP or Medicaid.
In North Carolina alone, the GAO estimated that 4,317 adult SNAP recipients worked for Walmart. The company also ranked near the top in Georgia, Maine, Oklahoma and several other participating states.
Nationally, an estimated 10.6 million working-age adults living in SNAP households worked at some point during 2024. Roughly 71 percent of working adult SNAP recipients worked at least 35 hours per week during the periods when they were employed.
This is not evidence that Walmart employees committed benefit fraud or that Walmart broke the law. The real controversy is whether taxpayers are effectively subsidizing highly profitable corporations when workers qualify for public assistance despite having jobs.
Walmart is also one of America's largest private employers, so raw totals require context. Even so, the same company appearing near the top of multiple state lists is going to reignite the fight over wages, benefits and corporate welfare
