Viral video shows Indian police beating Muslim detainees

Footage has surfaced showing what appears to be police in India’s Uttar Pradesh state beating a group of Muslim protesters with large sticks. Perhaps more shockingly, the footage was originally published by a member of India’s ruling BJP party, who praised the actions of the officers.

Protests had broken out in the city of Saharanpur on Friday, amid ongoing outrage over inflammatory remarks about the Prophet Mohammed made by a BJP spokesperson. As the protests continued, a number of properties belonging to Hindus were attacked, causing several injuries. Police have accused the men in the video of ‘rioting’ and ‘instigating violence,’ among other charges.

The video has now been viewed by millions online, and has been widely condemned, however there has been no condemnation from any BJP officials.
