Trump imposes 15% tariff on polysilicon, claims move will protect US security

Donald Trump has announced a 15% levy on the import of polysilicon, seen as a measure to counter China, which holds a near-monopoly on the raw material.

It is used in the production of semiconductors and solar panels.

The US imports massive amounts of polysilicon derivatives from four Southeast Asian nations — Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, and Cambodia — which are countries where China primarily has subsidiaries and manufacturing facilities.
