The Texas Department of Public Safety was investigating a fatal crash in Odessa involving multiple vehicles, followed by train collision, on Wednesday, April 19, local officials said.
Footage posted to Facebook by the City of Odessa shows a speeding train collide with a pickup truck after a deadly road crash near West Murphy Street.
The road crash involved a minivan and pickup truck. “As a result, the truck ended up on the train tracks and was hit by the train,” the city said, adding that the person inside the truck was able to escape before it was hit.
One person in the minivan died, the city said.
This is video is both frightening and very impressive.
It's "Jesus Fuck - I would not want to be anywhere near that = Horror!"
But it's also fortunate that the whole video of the event, turned out so good, that on one hand the train doing say 60 or so miles an hour - there is the speed of it hitting the truck with the attached trailer - that is one thing...
Then there is the pure straight line thrust of the mass of the whole train, pushing the truck and trailer, when it does hit.
I don't know the mass of the train, but it has 5 locomotives pulling it, so lets say that it's a 5000 ton train - hitting and pulling 2 tons of truck and trailer... it only clips the front of the truck.. so..
5000 tons divided by 2 = 2500 to 1 mass transfer....
The truck gets accelerated up to 60 miles an hour and the train slows down by 0.024 miles an hour.
The speed is dangerous, but the inertia of the mass is I don't know, worse, most dangerous, very concerning part of the collision.
Or maybe it's just fucking bad all around...
The sound and impact and how all the bits where just smashed into oblivion is appalling.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is also the other thought, that if there was enough of the pick up, to go UNDER the front locomotive and derail that - what that would have turned out like...
I spoke to a lot of drivers about driving these locomotives, and they said the tall animals like horses and camels etc., were not much of a problem, because they would just splatter and bounce off, because they were up high and had long legs.
The animals that presented the greatest danger to the big 120 ton locomotives were bigger wild pigs, that went under the locomotive and lifted the bogies like a giant air bag, before they split and burst...
This is the animal that worried the drivers the most.....
This is why I am not hysterically frightened of trains, but having professionally stripped, disassembled, repaired, serviced, maintained, and reassembled them - as well as seeing what little damage there usually is when they hit trucks on level crossing etc., I have a healthy and fearful respect for the idea of staying WELL out of their way...
For instance, if I was camping near a high speed railway line which carries lots of freight - just in case there is a derailment - I want to pitch my tent and have my cups of tea, well uphill and at least 4 or 5 locomotive lengths away from the track.....
This is called being prudent.
There is so much mass, and kinetic energy - that getting hit or landed on by trains, crashing or not is like standing on a tiny little spider and smearing it's remains along the ground.......
There is really not much fucking hope....
