This unlikely craft was built according to details supplied by Mr John Dickenson, the Australian inventor of the world-wide sport of hang-gliding. It was built to be a featured part of a film made by Mediacast Pty Ltd called Stones that Fly concerned with lightweight structures.
The sail is a concrete slab 0.6mm thick. The fibreglass flyscreen mesh reinforcement was coated with the concrete which consisted of a mix of normal cement, fly-ash and a superplasticiser. The struts were made from pieces sawn from autoclaved aerated concrete blocks( density about 20% that of normal concrete) and reinforced with 4mm steel rods glued in the four corners of the 40mm by 35mm rectangular cross-section.
The inaugural (and only) flight took place on 27 May 1987. It was piloted by Mr Phil Mathewson, federal secretary of the Hang Gliding Federation of Australia.
