See based upon the best available evidence they had at the time, their ideas appeared to be reasonable and sound, for many good reasons. BUT as more evidence comes to light, the stories evolve and change - in part and some stuff is deleted and new stuff is included... Darwin postulated that we did descend from apes... so he was right on that score.

Go read his books and papers on the subjects he studied....
