I suspect the reason has a lot to do with the fraternity and sorority systems. The over-the-top, stereotypical leftyness of academia started in the 80's or so (I'd wager it, anyway - it was before I was contemporarily aware). Although it could've been as recent as the 90's. And here, I'm referring to the OP status of leftism. Sure it was always present, but it didn't dominate every aspect of academia as it does now.
But the fraternities.... those have been a mainstay since at least the 50's, and likely from much earlier. I guess what I'm getting at is, that it has been a loooong time since academia has been a proper meritocracy. So well-to-do, "educated", middle class parents, never really expect their children to receive a rigorous education. Those parents simply expect that they're sending their children off to a social club, instead of the reality of the current indoctrination centers.
But I'd say that's why there's no alarm, or outcry, when it's demonstrated that universities provide substandard education. The entire institution has been sold across society with a wink and a nod, this entire time. With gallows humor, I have to chuckle to myself at the parents who expected to reap the swindle of cronyism, instead receiving the swindle of communism. It's kinda funny - during certain black-pill moods, anyway.
But that's the hypothesis I'd venture. (now I get to find out if I'm just reiterating what Halsey's gonna say)
