Its not that machiavelli wanted us to abandon all morality. He wanted us to understand that morality was subjective, situational and functional. The rules that apply to the peasant in the field dont apply to the prince in the castle. Not because the prince is better, but rather because the prince is faced with a different set of problems to which he needs to apply different guiding principles.
If the prince acts like the peasant, then everyone dies. If the peasant acts like the prince, everyone dies.
Of course this raises the issue of governmental structure, but thats a different discussion. The same idea applies regardless of governmental structure, just different principle sets for the different societal roles.
