A Conversation with The Honorable John Kerry, 68th Secretary of State, and The Honorable Mike Pompeo, 70th Secretary of State.

The Dartmouth Political Union proudly presents the seventh event in the DPU Debate Series: Critical Discourse in the Age of Disagreement. To discuss the future of United States foreign policy, the DPU is excited to host two former Secretaries of State, each of whom offers years of diplomatic and political experience: John Kerry and Mike Pompeo.

John Kerry served as the United States’ 68th Secretary of State from 2013 to 2017. As America’s top diplomat, he guided the Department’s strategy on nuclear nonproliferation, combating radical extremism, and the threat of climate change. His tenure was marked by the successful negotiation of the Iran nuclear deal and the Paris Climate Agreement. On January 20th, 2021, he was sworn in as our nation’s inaugural Special Presidential Envoy for Climate and the first-ever Principal to sit on the National Security Council entirely dedicated to climate change.

Michael R. Pompeo served as the 70th Secretary of State of the United States, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and was elected to four terms in Congress representing the Fourth District of Kansas. As our nation’s most senior diplomat in the Trump Administration and as President Trump’s chief negotiator, Mike helped to craft U.S. foreign policy based on our nation’s founding ideals, emphasizing religious freedom as central to human dignity. During this time, America became a massive energy exporter and a force for good in the Middle East, with real peace cemented in the Abraham Accords.
