One army doctor rode up to a British fort in 1842. A week earlier, sixteen thousand people had marched out with him. From Santa Anna's afternoon rest and 18-minute defeat at San Jacinto to Burnside's fourteen charges at Fredericksburg, Varus in the Teutoburg Forest, Elphinstone's retreat from Kabul and Cadorna's eleven battles on the Isonzo: five generals who were warned, didn't listen, and threw their armies away.
