RTM Debate: Is Romance Viable?

Paul Elam and Zarina Macha, aka The Rational Female, face off in a live debate over a foundational question about modern relationships:

Is the Romantic Ethic a viable and sustainable model for long-term human pair-bonding in the modern Western world?

For purposes of this debate, the Romantic Ethic is not simply the emotional experience of romantic love or infatuation. The debate is not about whether romance feels powerful, rewarding, exciting, or meaningful.

Instead, it is about the rules, expectations, and code of conduct that have historically accompanied romantic courtship and pair-bonding—the longstanding romantic rules that tell men and women how they are supposed to pursue, choose, value, and relate to one another.

In other words, the question is not whether romance feels good.

The question is whether the romantic rules themselves still provide a functional and sustainable framework for long-term relationships in the modern Western world.

Zarina Macha will argue YES.
She will defend the Romantic Ethic as a viable model for modern pair-bonding.

Paul Elam will argue NO.
He will argue that the traditional romantic code of conduct is increasingly dysfunctional under modern social, legal, economic, and sexual conditions, and that long-term pair-bonding requires a different foundation.

The debate will explore questions such as:

What exactly are the rules of the Romantic Ethic?

Do those rules place different expectations on men and women?

Are those expectations still compatible with modern relationships?

Does the Romantic Ethic encourage realistic mate selection, or idealization?

Does it promote reciprocity, or unequal obligations?

Can a relationship model built around romantic conventions remain stable when social and economic conditions change?

Are modern relationship problems evidence that people are failing to practice the Romantic Ethic properly, or evidence that the model itself is no longer working?

Can romantic love remain part of a healthy relationship without the traditional romantic code governing the relationship?

If the Romantic Ethic is no longer viable, what should replace it?

The format includes opening statements, cross-examination, moderated debate, and closing arguments.

This is not a debate over whether love matters.

It is a debate over whether the rules we have inherited about how men and women are supposed to pursue love and organize long-term relationships are still fit for purpose.
