It is often claimed that whilst beauty, intelligence and athleticism are not given to all, the joy of hard work is a universal that all can participate in in equal measure, a true freebee that will not only improve your life, it is the key to all success in life. Hard work is the beginning and the end of a mindnumbingly stupid platitude that we have heard our whole lives but how true is it and what do we really know about our capacity to work hard? Let's put an end to this BS.

I would have thought hard work was strongly influenced by culture... but the motivation you mentioned, could have a genetic component... that seemed interesting... and worth thinking about or considering.

As usual, someone in this community has confirmed something I've long suspected but never put into words.

When I was active duty, I discovered that I excelled when I had a solidd standard to meet. I looked at 80% minimum as the opportunity to make 90% or higher. Problems arose when I started working for people who believed that setting a standard leads to people doing that much and stopping there. Perfectly understandable, but it also gives that person the chance to claim that ANY performance is sub-par so that the boss can promote and support whomever s/he wants.

@SteveOUK: Cool. I noticed when I was AD that certain things came easier to me and I started learning managing tasks much younger than my fellow enlistees... unfortunately, that led to some jealousies and later back-stabbing.

@WMHarrison94: Yup. One of the surest ways to get beaten up was to excel at something. Achievement was punished with greater burdens while just getting by was praised--if you had the right set of genitals.
