If you're intending to mine something like Bitcoin you'll need an ASIC on a mining pool, unless you rent out a GPU rig and get paid in Bitcoin (like NiceHash or Mining Rig Rentals). I like GPU rigs because they are more versatile to mine with and quieter, ASICs tend to be too noisy for home use so I haven't tried to get any yet.
