The biggest problem with BTC is the block size, and the block time. The blocks were not able to incorporate enough transactions, and got clogged, this resulted people to shift to other cryptocurrencies. This made bitcoin to be less ideal for trade, unusable for small transactions and micropayments - other cryptocurrencies took this role from bitcoin. Coins such as Monero, Dogecoin, or Bitcoin Cash, are superior to BTC, which became more of a method of investment than a currency.
