Yeah I see "ineffectual" combatting bats that have ordinary nails hammered half way into them, and they are nasty in terms of tearing clothing and flesh - and all that, but the thinner nails, tend to bend and flatten and pull out. However, proper combat type weapons, need to use decently thick steel rods, about 6 or 8 mm in diameter, of about 30 - 50 mm long, and you need a slightly tight hole in the wood, with clean steel, and a pre-plug of epoxy in the hole with a smear through the hole, and a wad of epoxy around the leading edge of the spike, as it is pressed through. This gives a solid bond over the entire spikes length and it helps to retain the wood in one piece. Then by spacing the spikes down the shaft, at 40 mm steps, with 60* degree rotations, it gives a really good spread of spikes down the shaft and it retains the strength of the timber. It also maximises the all around penetration and tearing effect of the spikes on soft objects.
