think of it from this perspective, while you are paying it off every other expense is pretty much free, you no longer need to pay for the water bills or electricity bills or the heating and cooling bills, because the house was built to provide all these things on their own. and when you payed off the main bill your pretty much living for free at that point.

no other house provides all these things at such a steal of a price, your average home's base cost depending on where you build or buy, can range up to 500k and you still need to pay for the heating, cooling, electricity, water, waste, bills on top of the original cost. conventional houses are hell in expenses in comparison to this when it comes to the overall cost.

@Salty: it obviously comes down to what you value. if you value stability and freedom at a low cost to your overall living, than this is a good deal, but if your values differ because you want to live near a city where you are close to everything than that's where your value system will lead you. or maybe not, maybe you just want to live the nomad life and move from place to place or live in your car or bus or whatever. most ppl won't want what this video is talking about, because most ppl want the best of the best through the most expensive systems, but everything comes at a cost and has it's pros and it's cons. i for one like the saving potential, though the home is a high cost just to own the land and the labor and materials put into it, the home still pretty much pays for itself, as you don't need to worry about power, water, heating. cooling, electricity bills as this home takes care of most of that for you. there might be some need to supplement some of these things. but you also have the freedom to do other things on the land to aid you further to keep you off the grid.

i don't know if i would like to be completely off the grid, but i do like the overall savings in this type of lifestyle.

it seems like that happens quite a bit in history. someone who has a genuine good idea gets purged out for more selfish reasons which makes that other idea get lost to the ages and forgotten.

yeah i know, but the cool thing is if you happen to have the money to pay for others to build it for you, than you don't need to do the building, i know a lot of people aren't in that position, but if you are, than that's the preffered option, however there are ones that are already built for sale, so that's how you could skip on the building time. there are so many options, hell you don't even need to build them the exact same way, the reason why earthships are so appealing to a lot of folks is because of how much they can save when they build it themselves, but there are other options, and you could save with these other options in mind.
