Muslims clash with cops after major commemoration called off in India

Violent clashes between Shiite Muslims and security forces broke out in Srinagar, India after the commemoration for this year’s Muharram was called off by the local authorities.

Muharram is one of the holiest months for Shiites around the world and includes large processions of mourners beating their chests as they recite chants to mourn the death of Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
