Multiple Piercings: A Dating Red Flag? | ADHD, BPD & What the Research Says

This episode asks whether tattoos and piercings can actually tell men anything about someone’s psychology — and whether the stereotypes survive contact with the scientific evidence.

Men are routinely told not to judge women by appearances, to ignore their instincts, and to treat observable warning signs as meaningless. But when choosing who you allow into your life, patterns matter.

Recent research has examined whether common body modifications are associated with psychiatric symptoms and behavioural traits. Interestingly, the evidence does not treat tattoos and piercings equally, and some of the findings were very different from what I expected.

I examine recent studies from Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States, including research on ADHD symptoms, borderline personality disorder, self-injury, emotional dysregulation, and whether visible body modifications can meaningfully function as warning signs in modern dating.

Some stereotypes survive the data. Others do not.
