Tens of thousands of lanterns were lit in Pantum Thani temple in Thailand to celebrate Vesak Day— one of the most sacred days on the Buddhist calendar as it commemorates the day Buddha achieved nirvana (was born) as well as the day he passed away. In 1999, the UN declared Vesak Day an international public holiday to acknowledge the contribution of Buddhism to the spirituality of humanity.
