The Russian military launched a massive series of missile strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, causing widespread power outages across vast swathes of the country. One of the major targets was the Dnepr Hydroelectric Power Plant (DneproGES), according to energy company Ukrhyroenergo. Videos claiming to show the moment the missile hit have been widely circulating on social media, and the company confirmed the strike caused a massive fire at the site. However, despite extensive damage to the plant, the dam is in ‘no danger of a breach,’ according to officials. This and other strikes, including one which severed power lines connecting the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant to the rest of the Ukrainian grid, have caused widespread blackouts across the region. The Kharkov, Odessa, Dnepropetrovsk, Vinnitsa, Lvov, Ivano-Frankovsk, and Nikolaev Regions were affected.

Russian MP Mikhail Sheremet said the new wave of strikes was in response to multiple Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilians, and attempted incursions into Belgorod and other border areas, which left dozens dead.
