Metallica frontman James Hetfield just delivered the reality check millions of concertgoers have been waiting for. After thanking fans for the time, travel and money they spent reaching the band’s Las Vegas show, Hetfield promised Metallica was not there “like some other entertainers” to influence people with political nonsense. Their only agenda, he said, was “love, energy and heavy music.” In other words: leave the lecture backstage and give paying fans the show they came to see.
Then Kacey Musgraves provided the perfect contrast. During her Dallas concert, she paused to curse Christopher Columbus, call him “the lamest person to probably ever exist” and declare, “We hate you.” The reaction online was divided, but plenty of people asked why a country concert had suddenly become a political sermon. Hetfield never named Musgraves and spoke before her rant—but she could hardly have demonstrated his point more perfectly.
