People in a Mexican town took matters into their own hands after money meant for impoverished residents went ‘missing’ from the public budget. Mayor of Oxinam Maruca Méndez and her husband Fernando, president of the regional government, were accused of pocketing 5.8 million pesos ($345,000) intended for community projects, so a group of armed residents took their two sons hostage until the money was returned.

The sons, both in their early 20s, were blindfolded and tied to poles. Video would later show the sons asking for a ransom, with one saying, ‘It is the only thing that the people of the Oxinam community want.’ The money was indeed returned, or at least appeared in the form of the ransom, and the sons were released after 12 days in captivity. The fate of the actual missing money is currently unclear, as is the involvement of the couple, but it seems the community projects will now go ahead after this... administrative error
