Male Suicide in Australia | Where Is the Male Suicide Reduction Plan?

Publicado em 25 Sep 2026 / Em Pessoas e Blogs

This episode is about male suicide in Australia — and why a death toll that is overwhelmingly male still does not have an explicitly funded Male Suicide Reduction Plan.

Almost seven Australian men and boys die by suicide every day. That is approximately one male death every 3 hours and 28 minutes. In 2024, males represented 76.5% of suicide deaths in Australia, meaning men carry the overwhelming mortality burden of suicide.

A man can lose his relationship, his children, his home, his purpose, his identity, and his will to keep going long before anyone around him realises how close he is to the edge.

This episode is about the difference between recognising male suicide and actually responding to it. I discuss male suicide deaths, years of life lost, suicide-prevention funding, the “women attempt more” rebuttal, self-harm hospitalisation data, why telling men to “just talk” is not enough, and why Australia needs a funded Male Suicide Reduction Plan.

Male suicide is not only a mortality issue. It is also a major disease-burden issue, measured in premature deaths, years of life lost, economic cost, devastated families, fatherless children, grieving partners, and lives that should have continued.

If men are roughly three-quarters of suicide deaths, then three-quarters of suicide-death-prevention funding should be the floor — not the ceiling.
