This is a great way to to keep good computers, operational.
BUT computers fail with age and wear and tear - and parts get rarer and rarer, and harder and harder to get.
AND there is also this fact.
Systems have limits.... the ONLY real reason I had to ever upgrade, was simply because I needed PROCESSING POWER.
You cannot open and work on a 300 or 400 page document with graphics etc., in it, on a 386 - you need something with a reasonably fast CPU and 16 Gig of RAM, and a fast solid state drive....
You need processing power to edit videos.
And there is the other factor, the time taken to perform many operations.
Sure you can leave a system running flat out and doing nothing but that, to encode and compress / produce a video... for an overnight or longer....
So what this comes down too is it worthwhile to resurrect a computer, using Linux.
For sure.
In principle - Winslop - anything less than a computer that will run the ENORMOUSLY resource sucking for nothing Microsoft operating systems AND the work you NEED to get done...
Switching to a suitable Linux Operating System will open up almost all of the resources, just to run Microslop, and make them available for doing work and the time taken to do the work.
ALSO there are VERY basic old computers, that while they fail at anything at less than the basics, there are a lot of other functions - mindful of "Time is Money" and taking 2 hours to do what ought to take 20 minutes, isn't an economically viable proposition, the older systems can be used for many basic things like coding and running stock inventories and automated water controls and ware housing - and really basic stuff.
AND at the far end of uselessness, are people trying to do sort of modern computer work, on systems that that clearly ought to be sent off for scrapping...
"Oh the super lightweight OS and all the superlight weight programs...."
"It's a fucking 286 or a 386 - either set it up as an automated water sprinkling system for a farm, or throw it out."
It's a case of OLD hardware is only capable of so much, and Linux can greatly extend that units capabilities and useful life - and it will work way better, with Linux and without Windows - guaranteed.....
BUT old hardware is OLD and OUTDATED, because people developed software that does way more, and simply requires way more "Muscle" to do it.
A lot of OLD computers were not shit canned, because they were bad, they were shit canned because you can't run a horse and cart in a NASCAR race.
A lot of old computers can be used as machine controllers, CNC and DNC - but then again.. there is all the ports and system compatibilities etc.,
Before you shit can that "once was womderful old computer", it could pay to explore the options available, to see if it will still be a goer, with Linux on it... Doing homework and research is a viable use, for systems that are too far behind the processing power to play games online....
