If they had the time to pack their shit, emergency outfits, extra clothing, food and water, etc., some medical stuff, and get a GOOD FEED, plenty to drink, and go to the toilet and get into the life boats with lots of supplies - Going to the shitter before bailing from the boat, is a good idea.

As I recall, I think the boat took 3 hours to sink, not 5 minutes...
