Barack Obama has now personally jumped into the federal investigation surrounding Ilhan Omar, accusing the Trump administration of using the government to intimidate one of the president’s political enemies. At the same time, Omar’s attorneys are demanding the immediate return of her phone, passport and other property seized from her Washington home. They claim agents ignored court-ordered protections for congressional material and want every recording of the search preserved. The Justice Department fired back that their letter was “riddled with false allegations and inaccuracies” and maintains investigators followed every court order.
Then Tom Homan poured gasoline on the entire fight. Homan said anyone proven to have committed fraud during naturalization could face denaturalization and eventual deportation. That describes what could happen if fraud is established—not confirmation that investigators have proved anything against Omar. She has not been charged, DOJ has not publicly disclosed its evidence and no deportation or denaturalization order exists. But with Obama entering the fight, Omar’s lawyers trying to reclaim the seized material and DOJ refusing to retreat, this story has become a massive constitutional and political showdown.
