Is makeup in public a mask? A sign of insecurity? Both?

From a psychological perspective, makeup can function as both expression and protection—but when driven by insecurity, it often becomes a form of emotional armor. Research in social and evolutionary psychology shows that women who feel uncertain about their worth, aging, or social value may rely more heavily on makeup to manage anxiety, control perception, and seek external validation. Rather than enhancing identity, makeup in this context can mask fear of rejection, creating a dependency where confidence is outsourced to appearance. Over time, this can weaken intrinsic self-esteem, reinforcing the belief that acceptance is conditional upon how one looks rather than who one is.
