China has issued a sharp response after Taipei described Taiwan as a “sovereign, independent, democratic country.” Beijing’s foreign ministry rejected the claim, saying Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and warning that attempts to seek independence through foreign backing are a “dead end.”
The remarks come after Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing, where he warned Taiwan against declaring independence and remained cautious on approving a major US arms sale to the island. Analyst Qinduo Xu joins the discussion to explain why Taiwan may fear becoming a bargaining chip between Washington and Beijing, and why Trump’s approach could signal a shift in US policy toward the region.
