Giant ‘doom’ fish stuns divers

There’s plenty more fish in the sea, but probably not of this size. This enormous Russell’s oarfish (that’s the name of the species, it doesn’t belong to someone named Russell) was spotted looking big and weird off the coast of Taiwan, and full of holes. The holes were likely caused by a shark attack, but we dread to think of the size of the shark that could take a bite out of the 2m long oarfish (that’s the size of 0.02 football fields).

Russell’s oarfish is known as the ‘harbinger of doom,’ appearing only rarely, often before major natural disasters. Many of the fish were seen in the run-up to the Great Tohoku Earthquake of 2011, while this one was merely sighted in the wake of Janet Yellen’s fungus-filled trip to China. Diving instructor Wang Cheng-Ru, who took these pictures, thinks that it came out to shallow waters to die. The fish, we mean, not Yellen.

Most likely the poor fish was panicked after an attack from this particular shark; Isistius brasiliensis, the cookiecutter shark.

I used to like swimming naked in the foamy surf at the isolated beaches... and then I thought about all the things swimming around in the water, that had ghastly sets of teeth that might like to bite my dick off... That little fucking horror, reminded me why I always swim with bathers on....

@Life_N_Times_of_Shane_T_Hanson: That shark is about the size of a pocket pussy.

Glad there's nothing like that in the water around here. Only thing to worry about around here is pollution in some area's.

@hqwebsite: I had an examination of a people eating phiranah's teeth, and they were like a razor sharp set of very small bent bread knives. Very sharp teeth. The Cock Cutter shark feeds by ambush and fast single bites..... Those teeth look alarmingly sharp and very fast cutting.

@Life_N_Times_of_Shane_T_Hanson: It's always the lower jaw...

The cookiecutter shark exhibits a number of specializations to its mouth and pharynx for its parasitic lifestyle. The shark first secures itself to the body surface of its prey by closing its spiracles and retracting its basihyal (tongue) to create pressure lower than that of the surroundings; its suctorial lips ensure a tight seal.[12][14] It then bites, using its narrow upper teeth as anchors while its razor sharp lower teeth slice into the prey. Finally, the shark twists and rotates its body to complete a circular cut, quite possibly aided by the initial forward momentum and subsequent struggles of its prey.[12] The action of the lower teeth may also be assisted by back-and-forth vibrations of the jaw, a mechanism akin to that of an electric carving knife.[20] This shark's ability to create strong suction into its mouth is likely also of use in capturing smaller prey such as squid.[12] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7a8XuYgoH8c ----- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NW-8fDX2t3A ------- https://australian.museum/lear....n/animals/fishes/sma ------- https://www.theatlantic.com/te....chnology/archive/201

If the fish risked certain death by going up to the surface that quickly, something even worse than that must be happening in the abyss.

its used to confuse prey/predetors, at least usually... it is deep water fish you can tell from the fins and the eyes.

That's probably the reflection from the divers' video camera light.

@hqwebsite: actually its not, it is a pearlescent it is a defense for fish that live really deep. it reflects light back at predators to confuse them or scatters it so that it looks bigger or defuse..
