Fukushima wastewater released into the ocean

Japan has begun releasing treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean, with the first batch released on Thursday in an ongoing process which is expected to take decades.

Fukushima plant operator Tokyo Electric Power maintains that the release is safe, while the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said that the impact on people and the surrounding environment will be negligible.

Not everyone is convinced, however. China has announced an immediate blanket ban on all seafood imports from Japan, while Japanese fishermen, who have long opposed the move, have raised concerns that the water release will lead to a loss of exports to major markets. South Korea, meanwhile, has said that import bans on Fukushima fish and food products will stay in place until ‘public concerns’ have been addressed.
