When I was in my early teens, a radio broadcast announced that the latest weapons development, was to be able to manufacture explosives, that had 40% more blasting power, than the same unmodified explosives. The guy worked it out that if the explosive molecules were say like a box of oranges, then you could fill all the spaces between the oranges, with marbles... Thus if a bomb held 100 Kg of explosive, the same internal cavity could now hold 140 Kg of explosive. Once the guy had calculated all of this out, it was simply a matter of time, until the chemists were able to reformulate and modify the compounds, and they achieved it.
