The flat area each side of the stream...... That is the bottom level of the flood way.

She is camped about 40cm above the water level, and then when enough heavy rain lands upstream in the catchment area, and the water starts to rise from a slow running shallow stream, and into say 4 times the current flow rate, it fills the base creek volume, and after that, then it spreads across the base of the floodway.

AND by the look of it, it doesn't happen real often but it happens often enough, and if the catchment is soaked, and then there is a HUGE amount of rain, it might rise up to maybe a meter deep.... or more...

That is NOT what you want in the pitch dark at 3am or at any time really.

I'd be picking a place that was at least 3 meters above the base of the flood plain, with easy access and escape, up the hill - just in case.
I'd also be keeping an eye on the ground - how saturated it is, and the current weather, and I'd be tracking the storms for at least 24 hours... ahead.... You know if the storm is travelling through the sky at 120 Kmh.... 8pm at night to 8am in the morning, that is 12 hours or 1500 Km of distance covered by the storm and 24 hours, that is 3000 Km...

She has also set her tent up, ONE step away from the river....

3am flooding and "Oooo ma tunts fulla wata!" and the stream that was 10cm deep is now 60 cm deep and the water is 10cm deep across the flood plain - and rising.... Second step out the door and she is going downstream......

The scarey stuff about this place in Australia is that not only does the flood come up really deep - but it sort of extends a HUGE distance from the water course it's self.....

That is all part of the old inland sea, that now drains into Lake Eyre, a giant salt pan.... You see the bottom of Australia rose by some 400 feet, so that made the middle eastern center of Australia into a giant puddle that drains south and gets blocked...

It's a long and complex geological story over millions and millions and millions of years... that is the 3 sentence simple version.

So the flood plain really is a few thoudand Km wide.... with lumpy bits of high ground here and there.......

Do your mapping and watch for cyclones dumping their rain inland.
