🕌 In this special address delivered from Masjid Jamia in San Fernando, Trinidad, on the fifth day of Rabi’ al-Awwal 1448 AH, Sheikh Imran N. Hosein examines the growing importance of the Strait of Hormuz by drawing a historical parallel with the Suez Crisis and interpreting both events through the framework of Islamic eschatology.

📘 The lecture begins by revisiting the decline of British global dominance following the Second World War. Sheikh Imran reflects on the emergence of the Bretton Woods monetary order, the rise of the U.S. dollar, and the gradual transition from Pax Britannica to Pax Americana.

🌙 A major focus of this lecture is the Suez Crisis of the 1950s. Sheikh Imran discusses the rise of Gamal Abdel Nasser, Egypt’s nationalization of the Suez Canal, the subsequent military intervention by Britain, France, and Israel, and the decisive pressure exerted by the United States that forced their withdrawal. He presents this episode as a powerful symbol of America replacing Britain as the dominant Western power.

📖 The discussion then develops into a comparison with the Strait of Hormuz. Sheikh Imran argues that Iran’s strategic ability to influence shipping through Hormuz could become a defining moment in the decline of American power if the United States proves unable to restore unrestricted navigation during a wider confrontation.

🕊️ The lecture also explores the history of the U.S. dollar, the end of dollar convertibility into gold, the 1973 Arab-Israeli War, the Saudi oil embargo, and the emergence of the petrodollar system. Sheikh Imran explains how oil became central to sustaining global demand for the U.S. dollar after the collapse of the Bretton Woods gold arrangement.

⭐ The session further connects the petrodollar to Sheikh Imran’s interpretation of the Prophetic tradition concerning the River Euphrates uncovering a “mountain of gold.” He argues that the hadith should be understood eschatologically as referring to the vast oil wealth of the Gulf and its role in supporting the international monetary order. The lecture concludes by suggesting that a major American setback in the Strait of Hormuz could weaken the dollar and accelerate what he describes as the transition from Pax Americana to Pax Judaica.
