@hqwebsite: I think the worst thing about them - which is everything, is when it's really hot, your covered in dirt and shit and grime and in a really bad mood, and your laying in the dirt, under the car, pushing the gear box back into position - and there are 5 or 10 of these little fuckers getting in your eyes, up your nose, in your mouth etc.. and the anger psychosis is setting in...

The "sticky bush fly" - the females need nitrogen based salts and protein to fertilise and grow their eggs, so when the flies are swarming all over you, they are after your sweat and the grimy, oily residues on your skin and clothing.

I recall seeing a photo of the troops stationed in Africa - chasing Rommel, and in the hot desert, between battles, there is fuck all to do. So the soldiers held fly swatting competitions - and the pile was a big cone of dead flies about a meter or so high.... It was one of those rare events, photographed, and printed in some obscure book, lost in the mists of time.... I wish I could find it through. There are WORSE fly infestations and the events that create them, like big open mass graves etc.... Just awful actually.
